Tidbits of News about Heart's Desire and this Website.

May 10, - The Season is finally over...very strange...we had a lot of action early...the best weekend of the year April 15 was attended only by Greg and Lynn Sheanshang...they heard them everywhere, but failed to connect...the last Friday night-Saturday morning, only Doug Hardcastle hunted...Hmmmmm.  WAIT'LL NEXT YEAR!

May 7, 2008 - Rusty Dunn snags # 15 - his first ever!

April 26, Uh...Oh!  ...long dry spell...but, Sam Murray finally gets # 14.

April 12, Fourteenth day - Nate Greene gets his 3rd.  Unlucky # 13 out of the way.

April 11, Thirteenth day - Ned Priest gets another!  #12 in the books.

April 8, 2008 - Tenth day - Ned Priest "windows" # 11 bird.

April 7, 2008 - Ninth day - Wilson Burton takes # 10.

April 5, 2008 - Seventh day - Robert Alexander scores for # 9.

April 2, 2008 - Fourth day - Nat Harris eked out his first of the season for # 8.

April 1, 2008 - Third day - Richard Speer took a nice bird for # 7.

March 30, 2008 - Second day - within the first hour, Nate Greene scored with his second bird of the season.  Later that morning, Skip Neblett got his first of the season.

March 29, 2008 - Opening Weekend Turkey Season - Immediately Nate Greene harvests 1/2 of a double - the other half being a clean miss by his hunting partner.  Within the hour, another attempt at a double was successful - Robert Alexander doing his famous call..."Are you ready? BANG!  Shoot!"  About a split second later, Owen Hardcastle got the second bird.  Later that day, Jimmy Love managed to take the fourth of the day.

Feb 8, 2008 - Lodge Reservation Sheet updated.

January 4, 2008 - Philip Fontenot - See picture...

November-December, 2007 - Three Great Deer Killed - See Deer Section - Vital Statistics on all to follow...

  1. Will Coble - 10 point, 185 lbs, Main 19.5", Ins. Spread 16.75", Base 3.75"

  2. Steve Minneman - 8 Point, 185 lbs, Main 23.25", Ins. 15.625", Base 4.25"

  3. Jamie Osteen - 8 Point, 190 lbs, Main 22.00", Inside 15.75", Base 4.00"

November 24, 2007 - This was not a good weekend at HD - two button bucks, four missed "Shooters" - one 8 and three 10 or 12 pointers...

  1. Friday - Philip Fontenot - Perched in Area 1 W in a club ladder stand, Philip spotted an old very large 8-pointer, but the buck was not in a very good position relative to Philip's stand.  So, he waited.  Finally, the buck finally munched his way to a shooting lane... by this time, Philip's adrenaline had subsided enough to allow the crosshairs to settle down...he did his best BRASS technique - Breathe, Relax, Aim, Squeeze, Slowly, etc. and was greeted by a "click".  Undeterred, Philip calmly replaced that bullet with another and went through the same routine, during which time, the buck had moved a few feet out of the shooting lane.  The loud bang was followed by the deer bounding over the hill and out of sight...no blood, no nothing...just another educated buck.  I'm sure there's a nearby limb or a tree that caught the bullet.

  2. Saturday - Doug Hardcastle - Drove halfway up the road in Area 8 to the 100 stand and by 9 AM had seen about a dozen deer but it was cold and the hand warmers has lost their umph (therefore, it's all Owen's fault for not having provided new ones).  So, he walked down to the truck, realized he could not turn around and decided to drive into the field to do so.  On his arrival he spotted a very large bodied "doe" and decided he should take her.  However, on closer inspection, the doe had a very large rack.  Easing into position for a shot, Doug could not find a brace and managed to free hand a couple of shots in the general direction of the big boy.  He drew blood, but several hours later had nothing to show for his efforts...A full search committee of Doug, Owen, Mike and Jimmy Barnes failed to do anything other than screw up a good hunting area.

  3. Saturday afternoon - Jimmy Love - in Jimmy's own words "...missed a deer at 20 yards" in TVA.  He fired 3 rounds in his direction to no avail - another educated critter.

  4. Saturday afternoon - Thomas Hawkins (age 9) - hunting with his grandfather Billy Coble in the Football Field (stand # 28), saw a nice buck on the road at over 300 yards and lobbed a round in his direction.  The buck dropped down, but quickly jumped up and ran away - some, but very little blood and another educated buck.  Later, on Sunday, Thomas and Billy went to the rifle range and discovered that his bullet dropped about 10 inches at 300 yards...

Here is the press release on Taylor Harris...:

San Antonio, TX – Taylor Harris of Nashville recently won both the Sporting Clays and FITASC National Championships in his class B.  He also tied for 1st in the 28 gauge and .410 bore competitions.

The National Championships are held annually in San Antonio with over 1200 participants this year.  Shooters compete via a class ranking system – Master, AA, A, B, etc. through E.  Sporting Clays is a clay target game featuring vastly dissimilar targets which are set up to resemble actual flights of wild birds and paths of bouncing rabbits.  FITASC is another event featuring much longer, faster and more difficult targets.

Taylor Harris enjoys practicing/shooting at the Tennessee Clay Target Complex (a/k/a Nashville Gun Club).  A graduate of MBA and UT-Knoxville, Taylor has been shooting competitively for less than a year.

Complete Results of all the National Championship events can be found at http://www.wyshotgun.com/schedule.html.

Late June, 2005 - Billy Coble, Robert Alexander, Jimmy Weaver and Nat Harris explored the Crappie fishing at Lake Sardis.  First Day each boat kept 65 over 10" crappie.  The second, one boat had 56, the other 72, the biggest being about 2 pounds.  See Pictures.

July 1 - Hunting Seasons - The TWRC set the hunting seasons for 2005-06 for both deer and turkey.  Major changes:

  1. Crossbows are now legal for all hunters.

  2. Expanded the age definition for youth as 6 - 16 years of age.

  3. The statewide bag limit for Spring Turkey has been increased to 4.

June - James Boleyn and Freddie Rosson are hired as Jimmy's assistants.  We no longer have the services of Tommy Marrison or an intern and these guys will take their jobs.  I met both this past week.  They were clean at 8 AM and very dirty at noon.  I think we have some winners!

April 2, 2005 - Opening Weekend - See April 2, 2005

March 6, 2005 - It's Turkey Time in Tennessee!  See Turkey Hunting for details.

January 14 - The regular deer season has ended.  Final harvest results - 60 deer, consisting of 13 bucks and 47 does!  Our members and guests did an excellent job taking the does per good QDM management practices.  The largest buck, weight-wise, was Lynn Sheanshang's 195 pounder.  The largest buck, antler dimensions-wise, was Tommy Hawkins' 9 pointer weighing 170 lbs.

December 20 - Added a short story and a picture of Lynn Sheanshang's 7-pointer taken on November 6th.

December 20 - Benji - per your request, here are quick links to some of the better deer we have harvested.  Robert Alexander, Arnie Pittman, Owen Hardcastle, Will Morgan, Doug Hardcastle and Nat Harris.

December 20 - The doe total as of yesterday is 31.  Owen Hardcastle managed to take two over the weekend.

December 5 - Will Morgan today bagged an 8 point 145 lb. 2 1/2 year old.  I do have a picture, but don't have a complete story.  Owen Hardcastle made the statement that this one was much better than his.

December 3 - Here is the shooting position for our newest killer - Tommy Hawkins - From his position above the food plot, Tommy demonstrates his shooting technique.  Notice the shooting stick.  It was a last minute addition to the shooting program.  Tommy used his 300 Remington Mag Ultra to drop a very nice 125 class deer at 150 yards.  No problem.  Anticipate the experience for a few days.  Hunt for 20 minutes.  Seize the opportunity and blast him!  Per Tommy, there's really not too much to this game!  See the rest of the story in the deer hunting section.

November 23 - Owen Hardcastle - 10 point, 135 lb. gross, taken in the North Country.  Details later.

November 10 - Unlucky deer # 13 was taken by the equally unlucky Will Morgan, who once again forgot his glasses and was unable to distinguish a doe from a button buck.  Our President is going on the "Got Milk" trophy with a very personal recognition of his mal-accomplishment.

November 9 - Added the results of the opening weekend of the Muzzle Loading Season - 6 more does and one 14" buck.  That brings our total to 10 does and 2 bucks.

October 31 - Added Matt Biemick's first deer (doe # 3) with a bow, and the Juvenile Hunt results (doe # 4 and buck # 1) through 10 AM Sunday.

October 19 - Added a picture of a member's new toy......

October 14 - The second doe was taken by Richard Speer.

October 10 - The first doe of the season was taken by Will Morgan.

August 27 - Arkansas Duck Season - Nov 20 - Dec 5, Dec 17 - Dec 24 and Dec 26 - Jan 30 - 6 Ducks, 4 Mallards (but only 1 may be a hen).  Also changed the Tennessee Season Schedule to reflect the same 1 hen limit.

August 23 - Look at the monster Philip Fontenot capturedNeedless to say, Foster Butt has been given the responsibility to mount it for placement at the Lodge for a year, then on Philip's wall.

August 23 - Added the dates for hunting Doves, Deer, Ducks, Geese and Fall Turkey.  Duck Hunters - Mark your calendars for the new 2-day season opener on November 27 - 28.  Also added a correction to the story of the 25th turkey harvested by Richard Speer.

June 14 - Here he is.  Mr. America - Matt Biemick, our new intern.  This was taken Sunday afternoon, just after he and Jimmy discovered we had lost 186 baby ducks to some mysterious illness.  Matt is 21 with a dripping wet fighting weight of 150 lbs on his 6' frame.  We understand he knows how to swim the largest ocean and jump over the highest mountain, so he's a perfect fit for Jimmy and Heart's Desire.  We also understand Bruce Hering has instructed him on the finest techniques of duck and goose hunting in Illinois, but we have a few hills to consider for deer.  They get in the way during Turkey hunting also.  At any rate, Matt's a welcome addition.

June 14 - Added a shortened version of the story associated with the unsuspecting 25th bird, who really had a hard day when a number of circumstances all came together with only Richard Speer having a weapon in his hands.

May 18 - Added the 25th and final bird taken this year - Richard Speer, with help from Nate Greene, Carl Johnson and Michael Zanolli.

May 3 - Added the 24th bird taken by David Neblett.

May 1 - Added Skip's actual story.  It's a "must read".  Take a few minutes and enjoy.

April 29 - Added a brief on turkey # 23 taken by Ned Priest.

April 28 - Added the picture of Con Knox and Don Alexander.

April 26 - And we continue to set new standards.  Eric Pederson nailed #20 with a 13.75 pound jake, his first ever.  Then, Sunday our Chairman Ned Priest seduced a 2 year old 19.625 pounder with a worn out 5" beard and 7/8" spurs.  Not to be outdone, Skip Neblett limited out with another worn out 3 year old with vital statistics of 15.5 lbs., 9" beard and 7/8" spurs.  Skip has now called in 2 for himself, 1 for son David and 1 for his intern guest.  I believe this is the first ever for someone using all his tags at Heart's Desire.  Kudos to Skip for a great season.  Stories to follow.

April 20 - Records are falling each day!  On the 10th, David Neblett officially broke the two year standing record of 13.  Then on the 15th, Wilson Burton, Nat Harris and Nate Greene went 3 for 3 for birds # 15, 16 and 17 (3 birds for the only 3 hunters that day).  Sid Dassinger got # 18 on the 17th and Marcus Sheanshang harvested # 19 on the morning of the 18th.  See details.

April 10th -  The Heart's Desire turkey record of 13 birds taken in one season was tied this morning by Doug Hardcastle - on the 8th day of the 2004 season!  See details.

April 7 - Added additional posts for Turkeys # 9 & 10 - Con Knox and Will Morgan.  Corrected an earlier double-error post for Con - this one is much more accurate.

April 6 - First posting in awhile.  It's Turkey Time in Tennessee.

Opening weekend was great with 8 Toms being harvested.  For each of the last two seasons, we harvested 13 each year.  If we continue to be lucky, or skillful and Frank would say, 2004 will be our best year ever.

Saturday, Frank Stephens, Robert Alexander, Wilson Burton, Richard Speer, Kristie Sheanshang, Philip Fontenot, Con Knox and Will Morgan scored.

The festivities began Friday night with the presentation of the "Got Gas" reminder T-Shirt and early the next morning with the large "Got Gas" banner as a final reminder before venturing out into the woods.

By 8 AM, these three had returned with their harvests.  Frank Stephens, Robert Alexander and Wilson Burton.

See Turkey in the Hunting Section.

January 15 - Board of Directors Meeting.  Philip Fontenot made sure the harvesting of a 10' spike by Robert Alexander did not go unnoticed by the Board or by the visitors to this website.  I think Philip is looking for some empathy from others.  However, it is a cool T-shirt I'm sure we'll see it regularly.

Just another picture of the other side of the T-shirt.  Pretty good show for a practical joker dentist!

Double click on it for a larger version.

January 6 - Added a picture of Wilson Burton's 10 pointer.

January 5 - Added a picture of Nathaniel Greene and his doe and a picture and brief story on Will Morgan's recent success.

December 2 - Added a picture from Opening Day of Duck Season.

December 1 - Picture of Denny's deer....

November 29 - Denny Michaelis, a guest of Greg Sheanshang's, scores with a big buck.  See the brief story.  We'll have pictures soon.

November 27 - Added the spring turkey season dates and bag limits.  Also added a new page to the Hunting Section - Clear Cut Rehab & Enhancement Plans.  This is Ned's program and will be expanded as the plans are developed.  And, added the results of Opening Day of Duck Season.

November 26 - Added the exact weights and measurements to the deer taken on Opening Weekend.  See and reread stories.

November 25 - Published the pictures and stories of our excellent opening deer hunting week.  Owen Hardcastle, Will Morgan and Ned Priest were all successful in taking nice trophies.  Nathaniel Minneman also got a trophy fox squirrel.

November 13 - Edited the Membership Page to remove the "new member" designation.  Does # 9 through 14 have been harvested.  And for some reason, Karnack the Magnificent (old Johnny Carson character) is sending the answer "Dr. Phil", but I haven't received the envelope for the question.  Could it be?  No.  Yes?  Oh, no.....

November 3rd & 4th - Does #'s 6, 7 and 8 were taken during the first day of Muzzle Loading Season.  Also, added a picture of Will Morgan and his nice 3 - 4 pound bass taken on the 3rd.

November 1st & 2nd - Does numbers 3, 4, and 5 were harvested this weekend on the special Juvenile Hunt weekend.  David Rohrer with two and Clay Adkisson with one were the lucky hunters.  See the story in the Deer Hunting Section.

October 31 - Learned that doe # 2 had been taken recently.  Ned Priest managed to take a 6 1/2 year old.  Congratulations!  Details later.

October 26 - Added pictures and a brief story (not necessarily factual) on a recent pheasant hunting trip to North Dakota by Nate Greene and Nat Harris.

October 20 - Added pictures and stories on the two recent trips taken by members.  See both the Saskatchewan (geese, duck and grouse) and New Mexico Elk hunts.

October 16 - Just for the record, only one doe has been harvested this bow season - a healthy 2 1/2 year old by Hud Hudson, a guest of Will Coble's.  I can only guess that Philip Fontenot, Ned Priest, Jim Love and Will Morgan have not had the correct opportunity.

October 1 - Corrected the Bag Limit for both the Juvenile Deer Hunts.  It has been changed to 2 deer, no more than 1 antlered.  As with all multiple bag limits per day, the hunter must tag the first harvested animal, and then may continue to hunt.  If successful, both may be checked in at the end of the day.

Also added the non-quota antlerless hunts for Decatur and Benton Counties.  A hunter may now harvest 2 does in each of three successive weeks in Decatur County, and in each of two successive weeks in Benton County.  The first week, Dec 20 - Dec 26, is the only "Decatur County Only" period.  See details.

September 19 - Added the pictures of Philip and his trophy below.

Also added a picture of Will, Richard and Wilson on opening day of Goose Season, 2003

September 9 - The annual meeting was held at Hillwood Country Club last night.  Will Morgan was re-elected for a second two-year term on the Board and Ned Priest was elected for his first two-year term.  The rest of the officers were serving their second year terms.  Philip Fontenot became the first recipient of the Wall of Shame Award having bagged a button buck on Jan 3, 2003.  Future winners will have their nameplates added to the trophy.

At the left, we have the Got Milk Trophy prominently displayed with his friends at the lodge.  Look lower left.

At the right, Philip is graciously accepting his award from Hillwood Hostess Jennifer and Robert Alexander.  Also enjoying the presentation are Will Morgan and Billy Coble.

Also, it was decided to remove the balance sheet from the website.

August 24 - The TWRC (TN Wildlife Resources Comm.) has established the dates for duck and goose seasons.  See the schedule under the Hunting section, Deer/Duck Season subsection.

August 2 - Added the web address of Bolivian Adventures to the bottom of the Trip page - www.bolivianadventures.com .

July 31 - Added a new section called "Member's Hunting Trips" attached to the "Hunting" section.  Covered the recent Bolivia dove hunting trip made by Billy Coble, Cameron Coble, Frank Stephens and Nat Harris.

July 22 - Added comments on the fall turkey season.  50 permits are available for Benton County.  But, for the archers, the one turkey, either sex, may be harvested during the week Nov 15 - 21.

July 21 - Added the initial seasons for DOVE and CANADA GEESE to the Deer/Duck Season table.  And, added a link to the TWRA web site for the entire 2003-04 seasons.  The actual duck season has yet to be established.

July 5 - Report on 2 members excursion to Tiptonville (Reel Foot Lake).  See Fishing.

July 2 - Fall hunting dates (including Wood Duck/Teal and Turkey) inserted in the "deer/duck seasons" section.

Check out http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/MoonPhase.html for phases of the moon.  The new moon this year coincides with the opening days of the gun season.  Also, the fall turkey season is November 15 - 21, so one could arrive earlier in the week and try for a "two-fer".

June 21 - TWRA has established the fall hunting dates.  The best news is that the opening four days of gun season coincides with a new moon.  These are the days which historically have proven to be the peak of the rut in middle Tennessee.  So, mark your calendars for November 22 opening and plan to stay in the woods most of the day.

May 12 - Recorded the fish catch by Robert Alexander and Nat Harris, with a slight assist by Doug Hardcastle.  Go to Fishing for more details.

April 30 - Updated the Balance Sheet to 3/31/03.

April 29 - Added the actual story of Philip Fontenot's second turkey.

April 28 - Added a brief description of Richard Speer's third turkey, the club's thirteenth!

April 28 - Added the actual story of David Neblett's turkey.

April 27 - Added a reference to another "ghost" turkey - one which has been theoretically taken on HD premises, but for some reason, no story has been attached.  See Turkey Hunting.

April 24 - Corrected an error on Philip's home and added a vague reference to turkey # 11 theoretically taken by David Neblett.

April 21 - Recorded Toms #'s 9 and 10 both by Ned Priest...and, added a few pictures.

April 20 - Added turkeys 5 through 8 - Obituaries first, facts later.

April 15 - Corrected the spur dimensions of Richard Speer's 1st turkey.
